The presence of street children remains one of the urban social problems faced by Denpasar City as a center of economic activity and tourism in Bali Province. Street children live and carry out their daily activities in public spaces with limited access to adequate housing, protection, and psychosocial support, making them highly vulnerable to violence, exploitation, and developmental disorders. One relevant intervention to address this issue is the provision of shelters based on the concept of a halfway house, which function not only as temporary accommodation but also as safe spaces that support guidance and recovery processes for street children.
This article discusses the planning and design of a street children’s shelter based on a halfway house model in Denpasar City through the application of child-friendly architecture, behavioral architecture, and environmental sustainability principles. The method employed is an architectural design method consisting of literature review, precedent studies, site analysis, and conceptual synthesis. The design outcomes indicate that the integration of human-centered spatial organization, child-appropriate spatial scale, and the responsive treatment of both outdoor and indoor spaces to the tropical climate can support a sense of safety, comfort, and the social reintegration process of street children. The proposed shelter is expected to serve as a model of urban social facilities oriented toward the protection and sustainable empowerment of children.
